Oregon Wedding Photojournalist | Back To My Roots | Portfolio
I’ve had a few people ask me lately about how I incorporate photojournalism into my wedding photography work, so I wanted to share some images that show my style when it comes to wedding photojournalism. First though, a little explanation.
With everything I do, I try to find balance. I want to always have a strong mix of fine art photography, photojournalism and just simple creative expression through my photos. I want to stay out of the way as much as possible, but at the same time I want to have control and direct people to get the best possible images. I want to capture the day in images and I want there to be emotion that shows through in my work. I want to capture feelings, tell a story, and highlight the best parts of a wedding day in the most glamorous images possible.
So, for photojournalism. Here’s my criteria. 1. Only a small amount of intervention is allowed. 2. Photos must tell a story or have emotion/feeling to them. 3. Photos must be shot candidly or without telling the subjects what to do or how to do it.
And one more thing; people often confuse documentary photography with photojournalism. Sometimes the two go hand in hand and sometimes not. Photojournalism always has a a bit of a documentary characteristic to it, and documentary photography is always photojournalism. But, the two approaches can be very very different. For example: a bride and groom kissing in a field. Photojournalism: “that couple is kissing and they’re in very much in love and this setting is amazing”. Documentary: “couple kissing, tall grass, green trees, daytime”.
And with that bit of nonsense, here are a few shots that I feel summarize my style of wedding photojournalism.
